President’s Corner

President Chito Zaldarriaga remembers Manuel L. Quezon on his 143rd anniversary and looks back on MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos' talk to the club.

Greetings of goodwill my Fellow Rotarians of Manila!

Today marks the 143rd Anniversary of the late Manuel L. Quezon. We draw inspiration from this man who worked very hard for the Tydings-McDuffie Act (1934) which provided for full independence for the Philippines ten (10) years after the creation of a Constitution and the establishment of a Commonwealth government that would be the forerunner of an independent republic. These days, the significance of this man’s birth eludes us with the exception of the yearly holidays in Quezon City as well as the provinces of Aurora and Quezon. The template of his virtues and character are so much needed these days. Men of his caliber are becoming more scarce as we watch history unfolding during our modern times. Let us hope and pray that we will be able to clearly identify a true and worthy statesman in the coming elections.

Last week was a very engaging meeting with no less than the dynamic MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos gracing our meeting. His narrative was very interesting as he gave his update on Metro Manila’s plight amidst this pervasive pandemic. This was the first time I actually sat through one of his talks and was, indeed, very impressed. He came across as really passionate and genuinely concerned about the advancement of the various Metro Manila LGU’s. Let us hope that he holds out long enough to accomplish all the vital plans and programs on the MMDA plate.

Our very own Rico Domingo who now heads the Philippine Bar Association will walk us through the chilling realities of what is happening in our borders.

The pandemic remains dear brothers. Please exercise extreme care and caution even if already fully vaccinated.

Until next week! May God bless and protect us all!

Humbly yours in Rotary,
