Mr. Tony S. Lopez, 73, is the most senior Filipino journalist today. He has over 52 years of experience as a specialist writer on business, the economy, politics, security, and social issues in the Philippines and the rest of Asia. He is the founder, editor, publisher, president and CEO of BizNewsAsia Philippines, Inc., the publisher of the weekly business and newsmagazine BizNewsAsia, now on its 22nd year. Previously, he worked for 30 years for the smallest and greatest Philippine newspapers, and for the largest and most influential global media organizations, including The Manila Chronicle, The Manila Times, and The Times Journal; and Time Warner’s Asiaweek, the Mainichi Shimbun of Japan, and ZDF and ARD tv stations of Germany. The most influential magazine in Manila, BizNewsAsia is remarkable for its incisive and in-depth reporting on business and the economy. He made Asiaweek of Time Warner the largest foreign weekly news magazine in the Philippines.
Tony Lopez finished journalism, with minor in economics and marketing, at the University of Santo Tomas, graduating magna cum laude in 1970 on a four-year full scholarship. He taught journalism, political science, and economics as an associate professor for three and a half years, at UST, as the holder of the Teodoro Valencia Professorial Chair in Journalism. He took up three semesters of MBA at the Ateneo de Manila University, and finished global journalism at the University of Stockholm, Sweden.
He won The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) award for international journalism in 1985, the Hero of EDSA award and gold medal from the Philippine Star in 1987, the Outstanding Manilan in international journalism in 1989, Journalist of the Year from the Filipino Reporter Magazine, the Outstanding Thomasian Award in the field of arts and letters, and was cited as among the 100 greatest alumni of the UST College of Arts and Letters during the college’s centennial year. The Rotary Club of Manila has given him eight awards, including the two best awards—Journalist of the Year 2019, and the Centennial Journalist of the Year during RCM’s centennial.
Tony is the first honorary member of CREBA, the largest and most prestigious association of developers. He is a governor of the Philippine Constitution Association, a founding member of the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP), a member of the Management Association of the Philippines, and has been a long-time chairman of the Manila Overseas Press Club, the Philippines’ oldest and most prestigious press club. He has been an RCM member for the past 30 years.
