OpenText File Comparator

Condition BEFORE Innovation

OpenText has been using a third-party application called “Beyond Compare” to compare two files for validating inputs/outputs/files and generating compare reports (example: invoices, purchase orders, ship notice, etc.). Every time we have new hires, OpenText purchases new license keys in new laptop units. As per current pricing of “Beyond Compare” License Standard Edition, its normal price is at $30 per user. Hence if we have 100 new hires or license keys to purchase very year, we need to spend $3,000 per year alone.

Change/Intervention Done

Carlo did a compare analysis with other commercially available tools but there are so much that can be done with an in-house application of OpenText. Aside from security features of allowing it to run only within the OpenText network, it’s quickly customizable given the nature of the business and the proprietary nature of our applications. Aside from just comparing two-files, it can compare multiple file sets and generate comparison report (html file) that we then needed for documentation purposes. Moreover, it can even generate compare reports for these multiple file sets in just one click. This feature sets this tool apart from Beyond Compare (3rd Party Application) where we need to do it manually one-by-one. There are also other multiple functions that are available in the tools which cannot be done in other commercially available tools such as the following:

Single Line files are not covered by Beyond Compare. With our tool, it allows users to indicate the line separator and compare the files in a more organized and easier to read view.

Data are delimited by a specified character. Beyond Compare has no handling for this. With our tool, it allows users to indicate the data separator and compare the files in a nicer view.

Most commercially available tools cannot directly produce multiple paired compare report. With our tool, you simply need to indicate the pairings, and click Generate Report.

Condition AFTER Innovation

OpenText discontinued the purchasing of new license keys from the third-party application which contributed to around 218,400.00 Philippine Pesos savings for 2 years. This also contributed to the speed and quality of map deliverables. Because of its reusability and scalability, it is easily customizable to suit the ever-changing needs of our clients. The codes of this tool were also applied with our major translation software called “Visual Mapper” and is now used for automation on testing and verification process. Due to this Innovation, one of the recent OpenText acquired companies has reviewed Carlo's File Comparator and as to date, is considering on using the same tool for their current processes.
