Clyde Justine A. Cayaban, Maintenance Order Processor
TOWER Awards 2023 individual awardee Clyde Justine Cayaban of FCF Minerals Corporation developed a heavy equipment condition monitoring system for maintenance planning.

Clyde Justine Cayaban is one of the two Maintenance Order Processors in the Mobile Maintenance section at FCF Minerals Corporation. He is a resident of Brgy. Bone North, Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya. Happily married and has three kids. Albeit being a Political Science undergrad at Saint Mary’s University, Clyde was hired as an FCF employee on September 23, 2014, and has been a consistent employee ever since. He was tasked to raise materials and parts requisitions, keep track, store, and issue parts needed for the planned repair of both light and mining equipment. Often time showing exceptional skills in doing his assigned tasks. He gradually gained interest and learned how the Mobile section planning system works, which eventually led him to develop and advance his skills in Microsoft Excel. With this, in the absence of planners, he is legible to take on the tasks and responsibilities of a maintenance planner and scheduler.
2019 has been a year that mine equipment reliability is at its lowest and equipment breakdown is at its peak. With no planners to lead the planning team, haphazard equipment maintenance planning with no real monitoring has gone uncontrolled. Clyde was assigned to analyze data from the current state of all the mine equipment as a target to improve machine performance and reliability
Clyde developed a system that would forecast inspection and preventive maintenance schedules. The system is better known as heavy Equipment Condition Monitoring. This system became the basis for short-term and long-term maintenance plans. The maintenance planning team then ensures that the system is being fed with accurate data and is updated daily. With the inspection and preventive maintenance schedule in place, the maintenance team can now identify and manage defects that need repairs, and order needed parts in advance before a machine will have a major breakdown. The data from the system is then reviewed to assess what improvement that needs to be done on every mining equipment.
He developed graphs that demonstrate equipment availability and utilization, top failed component breakdown events, reliability performance or mean time to the first stoppage, and mean time between failure and stoppage with scheduled vs unscheduled downtime. These graphs serve as the basis for weekly and monthly reports that are sent out to the managers.
The system also contributed to a huge improvement in the planning and scheduling of maintenance activities. The planning team has shifted to a proactive approach rather than the usual reactive approach. These improvements lead the maintenance team to be able to measure and set targets for key performance indicators and machine availability, performance, and reliability. As a result, machine availability went up with the utilization and reliability improved. High availability and less downtime also result in reduced rental requirements, leading to improved control over maintenance costs. These improvements ensure operators that they are operating a safe and reliable machine.
