The club welcomes Arturo T. Valdez as speaker while Typhoon Carina's aftermath calls for solidarity and relief.
This week, The Rotary Club of Manila is privileged to welcome Arturo T. Valdez, a venerable figure whose career has profoundly shaped Philippine policy. Having served as Undersecretary for both the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Transportation and Communications, Valdez's expertise spans crucial areas including maritime reform, land transport, and environmental stewardship.
Valdez's presentation, “Our Natural Waters, Maritime History and Tradition as A Seafaring Nation,” is highly pertinent given the current geopolitical climate. As the Philippines continues to confront ongoing maritime disputes with China, understanding our maritime history and the legacy of our seafaring traditions can provide valuable perspectives on navigating these complex issues.
Amidst these discussions, our nation faces the immediate and pressing aftermath of Typhoon Carina. The storm's devastating flooding has resulted in significant loss of life, injuries, and widespread displacement in a region housing 13 million people. The declaration of a state of calamity highlights the urgent need for coordinated disaster response and relief efforts.
Valdez's insights into our maritime heritage, coupled with the immediate challenge of Typhoon Carina's impact, underscore the interconnectedness of environmental management and national resilience. As we engage with his perspectives, let us also extend our solidarity and support to those affected by the disaster, reflecting our collective strength in the face of adversity.
