Essence of Hope: The Rotary Club of Manila’s Artful Vision for a Better Future

In the dusky embrace of Makati’s twilight, the LRI Design Plaza emerged as a beacon of creativity and compassion on September 10, 2024. The Rotary Club of Manila (RCM) hosted its third art exhibit, aptly christened "Essence," where the luminous spirit of 60 paintings created by the Angels of Rendu took center stage. These young artists, each bearing the weight of their special needs, wielded their brushes with a grace that belied their circumstances, channeling their innermost worlds onto canvas.

The event unfolded against the backdrop of a venue that itself was a masterpiece of architectural finesse. As guests arrived, the air was thick with anticipation and a shared sense of purpose. The evening was more than an art show; it was a convergence of hearts and minds, united by a mission to breathe new life into the Sacred Heart wing of Hospicio de San Jose.

President Jujut Enriquez, with an eloquence that matched the grandeur of the occasion, welcomed the assemblage. His words were a clarion call to action, urging everyone present to partake in a vision that reached beyond the confines of the gallery. The mission was clear: to raise funds to repair and rejuvenate a space that had long borne the scars of time.

The genesis of this project lay in the hands of Past Director Phillip Ong, a Rotarian and painter whose collaboration with Angie, an extraordinary artist from the Angels of Rendu, had set the stage for this annual endeavor. Angie, despite being an armless painter, had produced over 20 works using her feet, her art a testament to resilience and passion. The 2019 exhibit was a resounding success, supporting those with cerebral palsy, and the "Essence" exhibit aimed to build upon this legacy of hope.

As the evening unfolded, the audience was guided through the exhibit by Mr. Celestino Palma III, the curator whose mastery of thematic flow transformed each painting into a narrative of its own. His insights illuminated the deep wellsprings of emotion and intention behind each brushstroke, offering viewers a glimpse into the souls of the Angels of Rendu.

The event also paid homage to those whose contributions were pivotal to its realization. Arch. Franklin Tee, celebrated for his generous donation of art materials, and Mr. Spencer Ozo, whose commitment to painting alongside the children was invaluable, were among those honored. The acknowledgment of Mr. Toni Lo, owner of LRI Design Plaza, for providing the venue, further underscored the collaborative spirit that made "Essence" a triumph.

The ceremonial ribbon-cutting, a symbolic gesture led by President Enriquez and other dignitaries, marked the official commencement of the exhibit. This moment was not merely a formality but a vibrant symbol of new beginnings and the transformative potential of art.

Among the early patrons were figures such as Past RCMFI President Willie Peliño and Past Treasurer Karlo Castro, whose purchases of artworks such as “Picassoesque” and “The Dance on Fire” not only enriched their personal collections but also propelled the fund-raising effort closer to its goal of Php 2 million.

As the evening drew to a close, a ceremonial toast led by RCMFI Chair Reginald T. Yu celebrated the collective achievement. The gathering of Rotarians and supporters, their faces illuminated by the soft glow of camaraderie and purpose, was a testament to the profound impact of the event.

"Essence" was more than an art exhibit; it was a tapestry woven from the threads of hope, artistry, and communal spirit. In each painting and every act of support, the Rotary Club of Manila crafted not just a fundraiser, but a poignant reminder of the boundless potential that lies in the intersection of art and compassion.
