Luis “Chavit” Singson

Former Ilocos Sur Governor

Luis “Chavit” Singson

LUIS “Chavit” Singson, a well-known public servant and businessman, stands out as a transformative figure in Philippine politics. As former governor of Ilocos Sur, Singson brought prosperity to a province once counted among the poorest in the country. His leadership helped turn Ilocos Sur into a thriving province, with robust infrastructure, a booming tourism sector, and a vibrant local economy. As he runs for a Senate seat, Singson’s track record shows he has the vision, determination, and experience to deliver meaningful change across the nation.

During his tenure as governor, Singson focused on improving Ilocos Sur's economy by developing industries and modernizing infrastructure. One of his most notable initiatives was his push for tourism, which not only raised the province’s profile but also provided livelihoods for thousands of Ilocanos. He revitalized the historic city of Vigan, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and helped establish festivals, events, and attractions that drew both local and international visitors. This transformation created a ripple effect, boosting local businesses and opening new opportunities in hospitality, retail, and agriculture.

Singson’s influence also extended beyond provincial borders. His support for major events, such as the Miss Universe pageant in 2016, showcased his vision to promote the Philippines to the world. Hosting Miss Universe brought international attention and highlighted Filipino hospitality, beauty, and culture. For Ilocos Sur, the event meant a significant boost in tourist numbers and economic activity, benefiting the community and providing new avenues for growth. This large-scale event is just one example of how Singson’s initiatives had far-reaching impacts, enhancing the Philippines’ image on the global stage.

Moreover, Singson has been an avid supporter of Filipino sports, recognizing the potential of sports to unite communities and uplift the youth. His sponsorship of basketball teams, boxing matches, and other athletic events shows his commitment to investing in young Filipino talent. Through sports, Singson aims to instill values of discipline and hard work in the next generation, which he sees as essential to building a stronger, more resilient country. His sponsorships have not only provided opportunities for young athletes but have also helped uplift Filipino pride on both the local and international levels.

Singson’s journey has not been without challenges. He has faced controversies and political battles that tested his resolve and resilience. However, he has consistently proven his capacity to overcome adversity, using each challenge as an opportunity for growth. His experiences have strengthened his understanding of the complex issues that ordinary Filipinos face. Singson’s practical approach to governance, honed through years of handling real-world problems, is a strength he promises to bring to the Senate.

Chavit Singson is now asking Filipinos to consider his solid record of public service and tangible achievements as they vote for Senators of the Republic in May. He cites his experience in transforming Ilocos Sur from a struggling province to one of the richest in the Philippines as a testament to his capability. Should he win, Singson’s avowed areas of focus as a senator include modernizing public transport, “to bank the unbanked” and his push for a universal basic income to benefit Filipinos nationwide.
