U.S.-Philippine Relations in a VUCA World
At its 17th Weekly Membership Meeting on December 5, 2024, RCM welcomed U.S. Ambassador MaryKay L. Carlson as guest of honor and speaker.

THE Rotary Club of Manila (RCM), Asia’s oldest and most prestigious Rotary Club, hosted its 17th Weekly Membership Meeting in grand style on Thursday, December 5, 2024. Held at the Manila Polo Club, the event was a remarkable convergence of camaraderie, service, and diplomacy. The distinguished gathering, moderated by Past District Governor Vicente “Vince” J. Carlos, highlighted RCM's unwavering dedication to fostering meaningful relationships and impactful initiatives.
A Warm Welcome to an Esteemed Guest

The highlight of the meeting was the arrival of Her Excellency MaryKay L. Carlson, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Philippines. Welcoming the Ambassador at 12:15 PM was an entourage of RCM’s eminent leaders, including District Governor Jackie Rodriguez, RCM President Jujut Enriquez, Past District Governors Obet Pagdanganan, Rudy Bediones, and Alex Cureg, as well as RCM Foundation, Inc. (RCMFI) Chairman Reggie Yu. Adding a special touch to the occasion, the Santiago Trillana Academy Concert Chorus rendered a heartfelt welcome serenade, setting an uplifting tone for the day.
A Celebration of Milestones and Fellowship

The meeting officially commenced with President Jujut Enriquez calling the assembly to order, followed by an inspiring invocation delivered by Rotarian Carlos “Caloy” G. Serapio. The audience joined in the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, presented through an audiovisual tribute featuring RCM members. Rotarian Ambassador Victor “Vic” Garcia III then led the recitation of Rotary’s Four-Way Test, reminding everyone of the ethical principles that guide their endeavors.
Acknowledgment of distinguished guests and December birthday celebrants further enlivened the program, with the RCM World Famous Music Chorale delivering a joyful rendition of the welcome and birthday songs.

President’s Time: Reports and New Beginnings
During his address, President Enriquez provided updates on several key initiatives:

The success of the Special Education (SPED) project.
Past Director Issam’s participation in the 55th Anniversary Fundraising Ball of the Kowloon East Chapter.

The induction of two new members into the RCM family.
The new members—Joaquin L. Arambulo, Executive Director and Founder of a business and technology consultancy, and Stefan Yordanov, President of Finance & VP for Strategy at Lufthansa Technik Philippines, Inc.—represent diverse industries, reflecting RCM's commitment to inclusivity and excellence.

Her Excellency MaryKay Carlson: Championing U.S.-Philippine Relations
The centerpiece of the event was the keynote address by Ambassador MaryKay Carlson, introduced by Past Vice-President Fausto D.R. Preysler, Jr. In her speech titled "U.S.-Philippine Relations in a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous World," Ambassador Carlson eloquently underscored the enduring partnership between the two nations.

Reflecting on the 73-year-old alliance, she highlighted its significance in promoting regional peace and security, particularly through the Mutual Defense Treaty, Visiting Forces Agreement, and Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement. She further discussed recent advancements, such as the Bilateral Defense Guidelines and the Luzon Economic Corridor initiative, which collectively strengthen the partnership in both security and economic spheres.
Ambassador Carlson praised the Filipino people's resilience, ingenuity, and warmth, sharing personal anecdotes that illustrated the depth of the U.S.-Philippines connection. Her closing remarks emphasized the importance of nurturing such relationships in today’s complex global environment.

Engagement and Appreciation
The open forum following the speech allowed RCM members to engage with Ambassador Carlson, exchanging ideas on enhancing bilateral ties. The event concluded with an appreciation song by the Santiago Trillana Academy Concert Chorus and the presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation to Ambassador Carlson by President Enriquez.

A Closing of Unity and Purpose
As the meeting adjourned at 2:00 PM, attendees departed with a renewed sense of commitment to Rotary’s mission of “Service Above Self.” The day was a testament to the power of collaboration, the importance of international friendship, and the vibrant legacy of the Rotary Club of Manila.
