THE partnership between the Rotary Club of Manila (RCM) and Hospicio de San Jose has stood the test of time, spanning more than eight decades. Rooted in a shared mission to serve humanity and demonstrate God’s love through action, this collaboration has transformed countless lives and continues to be a beacon of hope and compassion.
Hospicio de San Jose and RCM first crossed paths in 1946 with a unified purpose: to respond to God’s love by uplifting the marginalized and vulnerable. Their enduring relationship has seen numerous impactful projects. One such milestone occurred in 2012, when RCM assisted in the installation of solar panels for Hospicio’s Sanctuary Dormitory. This facility shelters survivors of abuse and exploitation, providing them a haven of safety and healing.
Another noteworthy initiative was the establishment of a bakery through a grant provided by RCM’s Paul Harris Project. The bakery continues to operate today, producing baked goods that not only bring joy to its patrons but also provide a vital source of income for Hospicio. Though modest, the earnings from the bakery help augment the institution’s finances, offering a tangible reminder of RCM’s enduring support.
In 2017, RCM played a pivotal role in transforming an old building into a Livelihood and Skills Training Center located in Norzagaray, Bulacan. This facility became a lifeline for eight homeless families temporarily housed by Hospicio, equipping them with skills that enabled successful reintegration into society. By 2021, these families were thriving in permanent homes provided by the National Housing Authority. Additionally, the center has trained hundreds of individuals, opening doors to new opportunities for employment and self-sufficiency.
One of the most heartwarming projects took place in 2019 with the renovation of the Blessed Rosalie Rendu Building, which houses persons with special needs, including those with cerebral palsy and autism. Prior to the renovation, three groups of residents were crammed into the original Rendu Building, named after Blessed Rosalie Rendu, a Daughter of Charity known for her unwavering dedication to the poor. The project was initiated by Mr. Ong and supported by RCM members. Through charity art exhibits, where Hospicio’s clients collaborated with volunteer artists, funds were raised to construct the Rendu B Dormitory for persons with cerebral palsy.
The transformation didn’t stop there. A second phase focused on renovating the dormitory for girls with special needs, followed by a third phase for boys. These projects not only improved living conditions but also highlighted the creative potential of Hospicio’s residents, who contributed their art to the exhibitions. The renovated spaces stand as symbols of dignity, care, and compassion, made possible through the unwavering commitment of RCM and its partners.
As Hospicio prepares to celebrate its 215th anniversary in 2025, it looks to the future with hope and faith. The institution continues to care for around 300 residents, addressing their daily needs, providing education, and supporting programs for the elderly, persons with special needs, and vulnerable individuals. Hospicio has reached out to RCM for additional support, including assistance with the repair and replacement of roofing and ceilings for a building that houses female children, their library, a function hall, and the Physical-Occupational Therapy department.
Furthermore, Hospicio envisions a sustainable future with the help of solar energy. With monthly electricity bills amounting to approximately ₱ 400,000, the installation of solar panels could significantly reduce costs and allow funds to be allocated toward other essential services. This initiative would not only benefit the residents but also contribute to environmental conservation.
Another heartfelt appeal from Hospicio involves sponsorship opportunities for its residents. Individuals can sponsor a child or elderly person, either partially or fully, on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis. This initiative allows benefactors to share their blessings while creating a lasting impact on the lives of the less privileged.
The partnership between RCM and Hospicio de San Jose is a testament to what can be achieved when compassion and purpose align. The daily miracles made possible through this collaboration remind us of the power of service and the enduring faith that sustains these efforts. Guided by God’s providence and inspired by the intercession of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal and St. Joseph, RCM and Hospicio continue their shared journey of transforming lives.
As we celebrate this remarkable partnership, we extend our gratitude to the past and present members of RCM, the Rotary Club of Manila Foundation, and Rotary International. Your contributions have not only improved living conditions but also uplifted the human spirit. Let us move forward with renewed commitment, strengthening this partnership and embracing the opportunities to make a difference. May God bless our collective efforts, and may the legacy of service and compassion continue to thrive for generations to come.
