RCM welcomes BSP Governor Eli Remolona as its first Guest-of-Honor and Speaker for 2025, continuing its tradition of hosting the BSP Governor first each year.

Editorial

THE Rotary Club of Manila (RCM) rings in the new year with a tradition that underscores our role as a vital forum for meaningful discourse and forward-thinking leadership. In keeping with this proud custom, we are honored to host Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Eli Remolona as our first Guest-of-Honor and Speaker for 2025.

Governor Remolona, one of the nation’s foremost monetary experts, will deliver a critical address on his economic forecast for the Philippines. His presence not only signals the importance of collaboration between policymakers and civic organizations but also highlights RCM’s decades-long tradition of hosting the BSP Governor as our first speaker of the year. This event sets the tone for what lies ahead economically for our nation, offering clarity and direction as we begin another year of service and enterprise.

The Philippine economy has proven resilient in recent years, rebounding from the pandemic-induced downturn with a commendable recovery trajectory. In 2023, GDP growth stabilized, fueled by a surge in domestic consumption, increased remittances, and a reinvigorated export sector. By 2024, despite global headwinds such as inflationary pressures, geopolitical tensions, and supply chain disruptions, the economy maintained a solid pace, supported by robust infrastructure investments and improving investor confidence.

However, challenges remain. The rising cost of living, fueled by persistent inflation, has eroded purchasing power, especially among low- and middle-income households. Interest rate adjustments by the BSP, though necessary to manage inflation, have created ripples in consumer spending and business expansion. Additionally, external risks such as global economic slowdowns and fluctuating oil prices continue to cast a shadow on growth prospects.

As we look to 2025, the Philippine economy stands at a critical juncture. The foundation for long-term growth lies in sustaining the momentum of key reforms initiated in recent years: financial inclusion, infrastructure development, and green energy transition. Governor Remolona, with his extensive global expertise and leadership at the BSP, is poised to play a pivotal role in steering the nation through these opportunities and challenges.

Governor Remolona’s insights will likely emphasize the BSP’s dual focus on maintaining price stability and fostering sustainable growth. We anticipate discussions on the continued adoption of digital financial technologies, efforts to deepen capital markets, and measures to mitigate external vulnerabilities. His forecast for the year will be a crucial guide for the business community, policymakers, and civic leaders alike.

RCM’s role in these conversations is clear. As Rotarians, we must embrace our unique position to drive collaboration between the public and private sectors. By fostering dialogue, promoting innovation, and advocating for inclusive growth, we can ensure that the benefits of economic progress reach every Filipino.

As we welcome Governor Eli Remolona to the RCM podium, let us take this opportunity to reflect on our shared responsibilities as leaders in our respective fields. The year 2025 holds immense promise, but it requires deliberate action, bold decision-making, and a commitment to service above self. Together, let us set the stage for a prosperous and equitable future, inspired by the vision and wisdom of the nation’s foremost monetary authority. This is the promise of Rotary — to make a difference where it matters most.
