Sen. Ping Lacson Exposes a Corruption Perspective
Sen. Ping Lacson quoted James Fallows on public neglect and told Manila Rotarians that budget implementation cut funding for landmark laws he helped author.
Ping Lacson has always been a hard hitting public servant. His ways have always been towards the welfare of the citizens of the Philippines. He could not have chosen better words to describe corruption in the country by quoting American journalist James Fallows, that “practically, everything that is public in the Philippines is neglected from view.” For him, the extremes of wealth and poverty in the country reflect contempt for the public. Many times, he has blown the lid off at many a senate inquiry.
According to him, while our country is experiencing a momentous transformation in terms of legislation with landmark laws where he was one of the principal authors, such as the Philippine Identification System (PHILSYS), the Universal Healthcare Law and the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education, the budget implementation was another story altogether. The statutory budget for these laws were seriously cut in favor of many line insertions and according to him, this stands to be a big disfavor to the Filipino people. Indeed, his quote, could not have been more timely, when he uttered, “show me your budget and I will tell you what you value.”
Towards the end of his talk, he urged Manila Rotarians to help in curbing these corrupt practices that seriously impede the foremost tenets of public service.
