Almost Asthma Season

Dr. Elias D. Adamos explains what asthma is, what triggers it, its signs and symptoms, when to see a doctor and how to prevent it.

Almost Asthma Season

We only enjoyed a few weeks of cold weather. Now the days, most especially in the afternoons, are getting warm and humid. But with the hot weather that’s signaling the coming summer or dry season, the rains on all parts of the country still try to give respite to the hot afternoon sun. When there are rains that do not really alter the humidity people who suffer from asthma become mainstays in hospital emergency rooms.

What is asthma?

Asthma is a condition wherein the body’s air passages narrow and swell and produce extra mucus. Breathing becomes difficult; the air tubes produce high pitch sound that is called wheezing; and via the body’s natural defense and reflex, there is coughing that tries to expel the extra mucus.

An asthma attack can differ from one person to another. Some people may have minor problems with their asthma. For some people, asthma can interfere with daily activity and work. And still in some individuals who suffer from the condition, an asthma attack can be an emergency situation.

What causes asthma?

Asthma can flare up in certain situations. To some people, asthmatic attack is triggered by exercise or activity (Exercise-induce asthma). Occupational asthma happens in the workplace when people are exposed to chemicals, fumes, dust, and gases. Many asthmatic attacks are brought about by allergens (Allergy-induced asthma). Allergens can come from certain foods, house mites, pollen, molds, pets, and the weather.

Signs and symptoms of asthma

Three hallmarks nail down the diagnosis of asthma: 1. Difficulty of breathing or shortness of breath; 2. Cough; and 3. Wheezing.

When do you need to see your doctor?

If you suffer from wheezing and cough and you think that you have asthma, visit the doctor’s office. Early diagnosis of asthma leads to early treatment and prevention of lung damage and worsening of asthma condition. If you were diagnosed with asthma, visit your doctor regularly to have your asthma monitored. Work with your doctor to keep your asthma under control. If your asthma attacks are getting worse, don’t try to solve the problem through self-medication. Go to your doctor for quick-relief medicines, like inhalers; and for the detection of other triggers, like bacterial lung infection.

Prevention

Get vaccinated for influenza and pneumonia. Identify and avoid asthma triggers.
