Profile of His Excellency U Lwin Oo, Ambassador of Myanmar to the Philippines
Ambassador U Lwin Oo, a former Air Force Major General, arrived in the Philippines on November 2, 2019 after serving as Ambassador to Nepal and Bangladesh.
Ambassador U Lwin Oo was born in 1961 at Mandalay, last enthroned and cultural city of Myanmar. Father is an Army Doctor and mother is a Librarian. He passed the Matriculation exam from St. Paul State High School, Yangon in 1977. He attended first year Regional College, East Yangon. Then, he joined the Defense Service Academy in 1979. He obtained a Bachelor of Science and became a commissioned officer in 1983.
After graduation from the Defense Service Academy, he joined the Air Force and attended the Pilot Training Course. He passed with credit and was conferred two distinguished awards, namely Best Pilot Award and Best Ground Award (Best Academic). He studied basic jet training course, advanced training course and jet instructor course at home and abroad. He obtained a Master of Arts in 2009. He served in various positions in the Air Force as a Fighter Pilot, Instructor Pilot, Squadron Commander, Commandant of Flying Training School, Deputy Base Commander, Base Commander and Chief of Staff (Air) as Major General. During his service in the Air Force, he was conferred the Hero Award Citation two times because of his brave action in battle.
He transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2015. He became Ambassador to Nepal (2015-2017), Ambassador to Bangladesh (2017-2019) and arrived in the Philippines on November 2, 2019. He presented his credentials to President Rodrigo Duterte last December 5, 2019.
During his tenure in Bangladesh, he participated and led in various bilateral mechanisms to resolve the so called Rohingya problem, the most challenging issue of Myanmar. He contributed in a leading role from initial stage of agreement to several joint working group meetings for repatriation. Simultaneously, he negotiated with tripartite partners, China and Bangladesh at the ambassador level, to resolve the issue.
His hobbies are travelling, reading, writing and playing golf. He published 1 novel and wrote more than 20 articles, 6 short novels in various magazines, journals and newspapers in Myanmar and in the English language about aviation and mostly, international affairs.
His spouse is Madam Myint Thandar, an ex-teacher. He has one daughter, one son and two grandchildren.
