Am I a True Rotarian?

Editor’s Note asking whether Rotarians live by Rotary’s values of service, ethics, peace, fellowship and leadership.

Am I a True Rotarian?

This is a question that every member of a Rotary Club must constantly ask oneself -- are we living the life of a true Rotarian? Are we listed as a Club member, or are we a Rotarized constituent of an organization? Do we participate in Rotary’s service projects? Do we follow the Four-Way Test only when it suits our circumstances? Do we use Rotary’s prescribed set of ethical guidelines to evaluate our decisions and actions? Do we abide by the four way moral code by conviction, or only by convenience?

Being a true Rotarian is not a walk in the park. It takes a conscious, constant, and consistent effort to embody the principles and values of Rotary International, that is, humanitarian service, ethical standards, and the promotion of peace and goodwill around the world. Every Rotarian knows that being true to one’s oath includes the following:

a) Commitment to service. There are no if’s or but’s, or maybe about this. Rotary International is a service organization and, as a member, one must do one’s share in serving the community through meaningful service projects, international initiatives, and various programs aimed at improving the quality of life for people in need.

b) Adherence to ethical standards. The yardstick that is the Four-Way Test must be lived and not just recited. While we are all imperfect beings, a true Rotarian must nonetheless make the conscious effort to live by these standards.

c) Fostering peace and understanding. It is the duty of every Rotarian to work towards promoting peace and understanding among people of different cultures and backgrounds. Closer to home, it is the duty of every Club member to be a channel of peace and promote better relationships, especially when there are misunderstandings among members.

d) Commitment to fellowship. Actively participating in Club events and meetings, and consciously building strong relationships with fellow Rotarians is another hallmark of a true Rotarian. Indeed, serving the community becomes much more fun and fulfilling if one does it with friends.

e) Leadership and integrity. A true Rotarian must be ready to take on leadership roles within the organization, and must perform such role with integrity, inspiring others to give their best for the attainment of a common goal.

Am I a true Rotarian? This is indeed a question that we must constantly ask ourselves as we continue our journey in our chosen Rotary life of service and fellowship.
