Determining Our ‘Why’

A column on determining our “why” as individuals and as an organization, and on PVP Reggie Yu’s Xavier-Kuangchi Award.

IN everything we do, we must be conscious about and determine our “why”, which is a powerful step in defining our purpose, our motivation, and our inspiration. The “why” is the underlying reason behind all our actions, hence having clarity about it is an imperative. The same step is equally important when we work with others in a service and/or professional group or organization. The “whys” of all concerned must be in harmony, as it is important to ensure that everyone is rowing the boat towards the same port. This is the importance of undertaking a joint examination and a determination of the common objective. When we do so, we are able to clarify our mission, align our actions, make each step consistent with our shared values, inspire each other to be better individuals, and ultimately encourage everyone to participate with more dedication and commitment. In time, others will also be inspired to come and join the beating of the drums and march to the beat of these drums.

Determining our “why” starts with a reflection of what actually motivates us. It involves an introspection, a self-examination to define and identify what specific impact we want to make, what values we hold dear, and what principles should guide and mold our decisions. Indeed, understanding our “why” involves self-discovery and uncovering our core values, beliefs, and desires. As Rotarians, we know that the mantra “service above self” is our constant compass, and the Four-Way test in the things that we think, say, and do serves as our reliable GPS to help seamlessly navigate our journey and make ourselves better persons.

On December 6, our very own RCMFI Chair and RCM PVP Reggie Yu will be honored by his Alma Mater, Xavier School. Notably, Xavier emphasizes excellence, service and leadership rooted in the values of competence, conscience and compassionate service. According to the school website, the Xavier-Kuangchi Award for Exemplary Alumni is being conferred to remarkable graduates “whose sustained commitment to and leadership of socio-civic organizations provide inspiration to us all.” More specifically, Chair and PVP Reggie is being recognized “for his tireless commitment to service and excellence, through over four decades of engagement with and leadership of a broad cross section of organizations.” As a tireless and devoted Manila Rotarian, among his many worthy undertakings, Reggie’s life is an inspiring tale of scholarship and service, hence this recent recognition (to add to his many previous awards) is truly well deserved. To our dear Editor-in-Chief, Mabuhay and congratulations!
