SINCE its inception on June 1, 1919, the Rotary Club of Manila (RCM) has stood as a beacon of service, leadership, and philanthropy. As the first Rotary Club in Asia, it has played a pivotal role in shaping civic engagement and fostering meaningful partnerships to uplift communities.

Among its most esteemed traditions is the conferral of honorary membership, a distinction reserved for individuals who have demonstrated meritorious service in advancing Rotary ideals.

The First Honorary Member

Shortly after its founding, the Rotary Club of Manila conferred its first honorary membership upon U.S. Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison. Recognized for his commitment to Philippine self-governance and his efforts in fostering collaboration between Filipinos and Americans, Harrison exemplified the qualities that RCM sought to honor. His inclusion in the club set a precedent for future honorary members—individuals whose impact extended beyond personal achievements to serve the greater good of society.

Notable Honorary Members

Over the decades, RCM has bestowed honorary membership upon many distinguished figures whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the world. Among them:

General Douglas MacArthur – Recognized for his military leadership and his role in liberating the Philippines during World War II.

President Manuel L. Quezon – The first President of the Commonwealth of the Philippines and an advocate for national sovereignty.

President Ramon Magsaysay – Known as the "Champion of the Common Man," he embodied service and integrity in public office.

Pope John Paul II – Honored for his global humanitarian efforts and influence in fostering interfaith dialogue and peace.

Carlos P. Romulo – A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and diplomat, known for his contributions to the United Nations and Philippine foreign policy. He served as President of the Rotary Club of Manila in 1935 and Rotary International's Third Vice-President in 1937–1938.

Qualifications for Honorary Membership

As outlined in Section 11 of RCM’s By-laws, honorary membership is granted to individuals who meet the following criteria:

(a) The recipient must be a male individual who resides or has resided within the club’s territorial limits and has distinguished himself through meritorious service in the furtherance of Rotary ideals.

(b) Honorary members are exempt from admission fees and dues, do not possess voting rights, and are ineligible to hold office within the club. While they are entitled to attend all meetings and enjoy club privileges, they do not have rights or privileges in any other Rotary club.

This distinction serves as a testament to the exemplary character and contributions of those chosen, acknowledging their unwavering dedication to the principles of Service Above Self.

Welcoming New Honorary Members

In continuation of this prestigious tradition, the Rotary Club of Manila proudly welcomes three new honorary members to its distinguished roster:

Past RCM President and Former Senate President Alberto Romulo – A statesman whose leadership has significantly shaped Philippine governance and diplomacy. He served as President of the Rotary Club of Manila in 1978.

Philanthropist Rotarian Kenji Mori of the Rotary Club of Kuzuha – An advocate for humanitarian efforts whose generosity has uplifted countless communities.

Celebrated surgeon Dr. Avenilo Aventura Sr. – A doctor who performed many pioneering operations in the country, including the first successful renal transplantation, the first bioprosthesis, and the first Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting. He served as the first President and Medical Director of the Philippine Heart Center.

Acclaimed international singer, composer, and songwriter David Pomeranz – An artist whose music has inspired and brought joy to people worldwide, embodying the spirit of unity and goodwill.

Their inclusion reflects RCM’s commitment to recognizing individuals who have not only excelled in their respective fields but have also dedicated themselves to making a lasting impact on society.
