Music and Rotary

MUSIC has a profound impact on society, shaping culture, emotions and mass behavior. It has even inspired political movements and revolutions. Indeed, music serves as a form of expression, uniting people across different backgrounds, persuasions, and beliefs. And because music can evoke strong emotions, we have anthems and hymns that are meant to unite a people, or call to action the members of an organization. Through music, the values and stories of different communities can be relayed and passed on to the next generation.

Music has had a significant influence on Rotary International, serving as a tool for unity, cultural exchange, and fundraising. In Rotary Club meetings, music plays a central role; and in our very own Rotary Club of Manila weekly membership meetings, we incorporate songs into our gathering to foster camaraderie and create an uplifting atmosphere. We have our hymn, as well as our unique welcome and birthday songs. On some occasions, we also play the Philippine Rotary song composed by no less than the musical genius George Canseco.

Notably, Rotary songs emphasize friendship, fellowship, service, and global unity.

Rotary Clubs around the world use music as a fundraising tool for humanitarian projects. Benefit concerts, musical performances, and competitions help raise funds for causes such as polio eradication.

Last September 19, the Rotary Fellowship of International Voices and Performing Arts organized a fundraising musical event concert at the iconic Metropolitan Theater. The fundraising activity was intended to support Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign, a well-known and worldwide initiative dedicated to eradicating polio. The concert – Tinig, Kultura, at Pag-Ibig – was presented together with the Philippine Opera Company; and the RCM World Famous Chorale proudly participated in this meaningful event.

Hopefully, there will be more concerts like this, which not only showcase the musical talent of Rotarians, but also serve as an avenue to increase awareness on Rotary’s various projects, and generate funds to implement them.

Many Rotary Clubs also support young musicians through scholarships, instrument donations, and music education programs. This is usually done in partnership with schools, orchestras, and community groups.

No doubt, Music and Rotary share a common mission -- to bring people together, create a positive change, and inspire hope around the world.

The music of internationally renowned singer and songwriter, David Pomeranz, will take center stage in this week’s RCM membership meeting. As we celebrate the Valentine week, David’s songs that the whole world has come to love will surely enchant and be a welcome treat for all Manila Rotarians and guests.
