President’s Message
President Raoul C. Creencia recounts how the Rotary clubs of Manila, Cebu and Masbate worked together to bring relief to Visayas earthquake victims.

WHEN a devastating earthquake struck the Visayas, the Rotary Club of Manila knew it had to act swiftly. Yet distance was a challenge, and time was of the essence. I was in Japan when it happened, meeting with a sister club – the Rotary Club of Osaka East. It was then that the beauty of Rotary’s extended arms came to life—through the Rotary Club of Cebu. With the local knowledge and on-the-ground presence of its Cebu counterparts, RC Manila’s relief efforts found a clear and compassionate channel. Financial contributions from Manila Rotarians flowed in, and with a big chunk coming from the RC Manila Foundation, Inc., the Rotary Club of Manila was ready to do its share to mobilize and deliver with speed and care to the affected communities.
What might have seemed a logistical barrier became a bridge of fellowship and shared service. In those critical days leading to the relief distribution on October 5, Rotarians from Manila and Cebu stood as one—united not only by purpose, but by the enduring bond of friendship that defines Rotary. Together, they showed that even across seas and islands, the spirit of service knows no boundaries.
The challenge was daunting: hundreds of kilometers away, communities were reeling, roads were blocked, and immediate help was scarce. It was then that the beauty of Rotary’s extended arms revealed itself—through the Rotary Club of Cebu who was able to organize a relief operations in Bogo last Sunday. Truly bound by friendship and a shared commitment to service, the Rotary Club of Cebu became the bridge that connected Manila’s compassion to the needs of the Visayas. With its members on the ground, RC Cebu swiftly organized relief logistics, coordinated with local authorities, and identified the hardest-hit areas. A similar coordination was also initiated with the Rotary Club of Masbate, which has also become RC Manila’s extended arms of service and charity to those affected in that part of the Visayas.
Indeed, what unfolded in the days after the earth trembled in the Visayas was a powerful display of Rotary unity in action. While RC Manila sent its financial contribution, RC Masbate and RC Cebu ensured that the donated items reached families who had lost their homes and livelihood. Rotarians from these clubs personally went to the affected communities, comforting victims and reminding them that they were not alone. In every handshake, in every word of encouragement, and in every act of giving, the spirit of Rotary shone brightly.
Through this collaboration, the clubs proved that service transcends distance. The partnership between RC Manila, RC Cebu, and RC Masbate became more than a relief operation—it was a reaffirmation of Rotary’s enduring fellowship and compassion. Together, they showed that when one Rotary club extends its arm, another reaches out to clasp it, forming a chain of hope that can span seas and heal hearts. In the face of tragedy, Rotary’s greatest strength emerged once again: the power of unity and friendship in service.
The story of how RC Manila, through the extended arms of RC Cebu and RC Masbate, reached out to the earthquake victims of the Visayas will forever stand as a shining example of what it truly means to live the Rotary motto—Service Above Self.
