On Day 1 of the 2-day training at Ilugin Elementary School (IES), 45 teachers volunteered to participate in the program.

To recall, we learned that many public school students are reading 2-5 years below their grade level. Sadly, this is a common situation in public schools across the Philippines. This reading gap tends to widen as students move through the grades, leaving them struggling in high school with reading and comprehension skills equivalent to a 3rd or 4th grader.

Although DepEd already has its own program the scale of the problem is such that private sector help is welcomed to help reverse this trend, to uplift literacy from the grassroots level.

RCM and RCMFI is on its second year of partnering with RSI as sponsors of this project. RSI has a proven more effective approach in teaching reading literacy, resulting in increased comprehension and faster learning of children. The novel approach uses RSI materials and their network of educators, who volunteer as trainers.

The audience are volunteer teachers who are being trained in this more effective way of teaching students how to read. They teach students outside of their required teaching hours. This supplemental training is crucial in addressing the problem of low reading literacy, comprehension, and critical thinking among Philippine students.
