Jose C. Rivera
Machine Operator at Onsemi, an Individual Category awardee, cut forming gas waste with an auto shut-off device that saves $16,002 a year.
The project “Reduction of Forming Gas Consumption through Application of Auto Shut-off Device” addresses the issue of excessive waste of forming gas (N2+H2) during idle states in die attach process. The initial problem statement highlighted significant consumption of forming gas during non-production time, resulting in waste of resources and costs. Through analysis, it was found that 57.16% of the total consumption from January to June 2021 amounted to $11,224.29 in waste expenditure. The project aimed to eliminate this waste by implementing an auto shut-off device that reduces the forming gas supply by 75% during idle periods. This solution was chosen after root cause analysis determined that a significant portion of the gas supply could be minimized without compromising product quality or safety. Implementation involved circuit design, prototype assembly, functionality testing, and installation on a pilot machine. The device automatically detects idle states of at least 3 minutes, reducing gas supply, and switches back to full supply upon production resumption.
Evaluation of results showed a 75% reduction in gas consumption during non-production times, leading to an annual cost savings of $16,002. Intangible benefits include promoting easy operation, supporting cost-saving initiatives, reducing carbon footprint, ensuring a safe workplace, and potential scalability to other machines. Overall, the auto shut-off device contributes to efficient resource utilization and cost-effectiveness while maintaining product quality.
