The recently concluded elections of the Rotary Club of Manila reaffirmed one of our most cherished traditions: the peaceful and democratic transfer of leadership within Asia’s first Rotary Club. The process, conducted with fairness, transparency, and mutual respect, was a testament to the enduring values of our institution. Through this, we once more entrusted the stewardship of our Club to a team of leaders who will carry forward the legacy of service that has defined our fellowship for over a century.

We extend our congratulations to the newly elected Board of Directors who, together with our continuing officers, now shoulder the responsibility of guiding our Club into the future. Their mandate is not one of privilege but of accountability — to uphold the honor of our traditions while leading with vision and courage in uncertain times. Equally, we recognize with gratitude the selfless service of those who have completed their terms, for their dedication has paved the way for continuity and renewal.

The weight of this responsibility has never been greater. The nation today faces profound challenges: widespread poverty, economic inequality, high levels of unemployment, a ballooning national debt, and the ongoing repercussions of global crises. At home, recent exposés on the staggering corruption in flood control and infrastructure projects have revealed a deeply entrenched system of patronage and abuse — an intricate web stretching from contractors and engineers to the highest echelons of government. Meanwhile, the Filipino people continue to struggle against the impacts of climate change, environmental degradation, gaps in education, and threats to freedom of expression.

In such times, institutions like Rotary are needed more than ever. Our Club’s history reminds us that service above self is not merely a motto but a moral compass—a call to integrity, courage, and collective action. While we cannot solve all of society’s ills, we can and must be a beacon of accountability, compassion, and hope. We must demonstrate that leadership rooted in service can still make a difference, even when trust in public institutions is eroded.

As we look ahead, it is fitting that this issue of our publication coincides with a fellowship that embodies the spirit of our community. On September 18 at Fable Lounge, Grand Hyatt Manila in BGC, Rotarians will gather for an evening of camaraderie and inspiration. With Kenneth Cobonpue as our special guest, we will be reminded of the power of creativity, innovation, and Filipino talent to uplift and inspire.

Fellowship is not mere social interaction—it is the foundation upon which lasting service is built. It forges the bonds of trust, solidarity, and goodwill that strengthen our resolve to serve.

Our elections mark the continuity of leadership; our fellowships remind us of our unity in purpose. Together, they call us to rise above self-interest, to confront the challenges of our times with integrity, and to remain steadfast in our mission: to be of service to others, and in doing so, to help light the way for our nation.
