President’s Message

The Rotary Club of Manila has installed Four-Way Test markers on EDSA, in a park and in schools, and the President explains why they matter.

President’s Message

OVER the past couple of weeks, the Rotary Club of Manila installed several Four-Way Test markers in various strategic locations – along EDSA, inside the Arroceros Forest Park in Manila, in Tukod Elementary School in San Rafael (Bulacan), in Mariano Marcos Memorial High School in Sta. Ana (Manila), and soon on December 1, inside the Mithing Pangarap compound in Balut, Tondo.

As we all know, the Four-Way Test is one of Rotary’s most enduring contributions to ethical leadership and public service, which was first articulated by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor in 1932. Despite its simplicity, the Test challenges individuals, organizations, and communities to uphold integrity, fairness, and mutual respect in their daily decisions. Its strength lies not in complexity, but in the clarity of its principles -- principles that transcend culture, politics, religion, and social background.

Across the Philippines and around the world, Rotary clubs install Four-Way Test markers in schools, plazas, transport terminals, barangay centers, government facilities, parks, and other public spaces. This practice is more than a branding exercise -- it is a public commitment to ethical citizenship.

The markers serve as daily visual reminders of honesty, fairness, goodwill, and service. In environments where people face difficult decisions or conflicting interests, the Test helps shape behavior by encouraging reflection before action.

Schools, I believe, is a perfect place to install markers because they reinforce character building. For students, the Test becomes a formative tool that complements values education, leadership programs, and civic training. This is the reason why we installed markers in three different schools in Bulacan, Sta. Ana, and in Tondo. I believe that placing a Four-Way Test marker in a school campus is more than just a Rotary tradition, but a strategic investment in the values formation of young people. Schools are centers not only of academic learning but also of character development. A visible, accessible reminder of ethical principles helps shape the habits, attitudes, and decision-making of students, teachers, and school leaders. Thus, by placing a Four-Way Test marker, we are able to transform a simple motto into a living educational tool. Indeed, it helps cultivate a school culture where truth, fairness, goodwill, and service are practiced daily -- shaping students not just to excel academically, but to become principled, compassionate, and community-minded citizens.

Moreover, by placing the Test in high-traffic public spaces such as EDSA and the Arroceros Forest Park, we help embed ethical reflection into daily life. The messages become part of the cultural landscape, influencing behavior in subtle but meaningful ways. While not meant primarily as publicity, the markers demonstrate our Club’s dedication to promoting integrity, peace, and community development.

These markers remind the public that Rotary is present, active, and committed to improving society.

In a time when misinformation, conflict, and divisive discourse have become commonplace, the Four-Way Test remains deeply relevant. The act of installing these markers reaffirms our Rotary Club’s belief that ethics is not an abstract ideal, but a practical, everyday commitment. Ultimately, the Test is not merely a Rotary slogan. It is a philosophy of life -- one that challenges all people, Rotarians and non-Rotarians alike, to choose what is true, fair, friendly, and beneficial.
